Mei Xu is a Chinese American entrepreneur who made it big in the US setting up a global candle business. What does her story tell us about the state of the American economy and the growth of China as an economic superpower?

As part of our interview series called “5 Things I Wish Someone Told Me Before I Became A Founder”, I had the pleasure of interviewing Mei Xu, Founder of Chesapeake Bay Candle and Blissliving Home. She is a Trustee of the University of Maryland in Baltimore and a member of Fortune’s Most Powerful Women. She recently launched Yes She May, an online e-commerce site to support women-owned businesses around the world.

When the pandemic arrived in 2020, Xu created Yes She May, an e-commerce platform to help assist women-owned businesses and address the retail challenges the virus created.

Mei is now focused on helping women-owned consumer product companies grow and prosper with e-commerce platform, Yes She May. In March 2021, Mei will also launch her memoir, “Burn” that details her inspiring journey from coming to the United States as an immigrant to founding her own multi-million-dollar business.

As an Asian American, I'm hopeful that the rallies and protests sparked by the recent surge in anti-Asian violence and vitriol will begin to address the quiet discrimination and stereotyping that has taken place in the United States for so long.

In her new book, Mei Xu tells the story of how she built Chesapeake Bay Candle, filling the home décor shelves at Bloomingdale’s, Nordstrom and eventually Target.
