By Selina is a woman-owned hair care company which specializes in products for curly hair. When we last spoke to Selina Church four months ago, BySelina hair products were only sold in a few British salons. Now Selina shares her updates and successes since we last spoke.

Since my first chat with Mei and her team back in September this year, By Selina has continued to grow from strength to strength. Awareness around the brand and the quality of the By Selina curly hair products is continuing to grow throughout the curly hair community, and By Selina is becoming a staple in more and more of the curly hair salons in the UK. Back in September, By Selina was stocked in just two curly hair salons, however this has now doubled to four salons. By Selina was also selected to be featured in the local Bristol Girl Boss and Etsy Christmas Pop-up shop over the festive period.
One of the most exciting updates for By Selina is the introduction of the By Selina Curl Hydrating Gel to the By Selina family. The By Selina gel has been eagerly anticipated among the curly hair community and will be released to customers this week with deliveries scheduled just in time for Christmas. Just like the other By Selina products, the gel is packaged in aluminum meaning that the products are plastic-bottle free.
Talking to Mei and her team has provided wonderful insight. For example, back in September, By Selina was not even a registered brand. However, during my conversations with Mei, she encouraged me to protect my brand, and I have now invested in getting By Selina trademarked. The official registration was passed just last week. In addition to protecting my intellectual property, Mei encouraged me to take the time to get to know my business figures in a lot more detail. Before talking to Mei, I had a good handle on the profits per bottle. However, I had not even considered the breakeven point, profit and loss, balance sheets or forecasting. I am pleased to say that I have started to get a better handle on these areas and am looking forward to understanding these areas better because they are such an integral and important part of every business.
Finally, as the year ends, I am focusing on the New Year ahead and planning for 2020. These plans will include a new sulphate-free shampoo to add to the By Selina range, along with more investment into my photography, marketing and website to ensure that the branding properly reflects the quality of the By Selina products. I will also be adding more accessories to the By Selina range to include scrunchies and pillowcases. I sold several pillowcases earlier in the year with 10% of the profits going to The Little Princess Trust charity. This charity is a wonderful cause as it creates wigs for young children going through hair loss as well as providing funding for vital research into childhood cancers. With the addition of more accessories such as hair scrunchies, I hope to continue this theme of giving back and making sure By Selina is a brand that is kind to our curls, kind to the environment and kind to others too.
As this community is about supporting one another, I wonder if there are any US or European-based businesses that would be interested in carrying my products. Mei mentioned there is a definite market for this, and she too encouraged me to reach out and connect with people on this site.

Selina this is Mei, I was just reading this and I had another idea. We have a women Peng, who, is based in Maryland, and has a line of super soft bath towels and she has an amazing hair piece to dry hair. You two should work together. And then we should find you the right salons in the country together!
